Behold

Laka

Standing

On

The

 Mountain

~

With eyes closed he grew numb under the cold shower in the TAMC barracks, and pretended he was standing under an icy waterfall in the mountains.  The hot water was not working this Saturday morning ~ again.

With a towel tied around his waist he was stepping across the hallway to his cave-like room when Pvt. 1 Tom Weasel stopped him and said, “Wanna smoke a joint, Duty?”

“No no no no,” replied PFC Donald Duty, invigorated from the cold shower.  “I don’t smoke it no mo’.”

“Well, how you gonna be mellow if you don’t smoke it no mo’?” said Weasel.

“I chant,” said Duty ~ and he locked himself up in his room.  He put on some clothes, opened the curtain, twirled open the window, sat down in front of a most beautiful sky and let the trade winds kiss his cheek.  Sure enough, he began to chant:

“Ku ana ‘o Laka i ka mauna,

Noho ana ‘o Laka i ke po ‘o oka ‘ohu.

     ‘O Laka kumu hula,

     Nana i ‘a ‘eka waokele…”

Outside, a misty cloud white and purple upon the hilltop, gently tumbled forward.  The cloud transformed into a pretty face with depthless eyes and a supple body with graceful moves.  It was obvious ~ Laka, the hula goddess, had arrived ~ and was dancing in the sky!

From the colorful lei hanging from her neck and tossing to and fro, there fell a flower.  It landed on the window pane in front of Duty.  “Mahalo, my beloved,” said Duty.

He reached for the flower.  As soon as he touched it, the flower turned into a diving mask and snorkel.  Duty whispered to the suddenly clear blue sky, “Ah, I know what I’m going to do today!”

With swimming trunks rolled up in a towel and Laka’s gift in his hand, Duty darted out of the barracks.  Sp4 Joe Honor and Sp4 John Country were about to drive away in Country’s automobile.  Duty flagged them down.

     “What’s up?” said Duty.

“We’re going snorkeling!” replied Honor and Country in baritoned chorus.

“Oh, can I go?  Oh, please, guys, please!”

     “Hop in,” smirked Country.

In a cove about a half mile on the other side of Waimea Falls, located on the North Shore, the three off-duty TAMC soldiers floated around above another world ~ Fish World ~ and occasionally dove deeply into it ~ all day long.  The surface of the sea was smooth as glass and you could see forever ~ even underwater.  The many colored fishes were sassy as could be.

Later back at the barracks, played out and cleansed of worry, Duty stepped around two MPs and a drug detection dog ~ German Shepherd type ~ in the hallway.  The dog was howling in front of Weasel’s barracks-room door.

Peace Efforts Continue

The High Peace Council (HPC) on Monday said government is still committed to forging a peace deal in war-ravaged Afghanistan and will continue to work to bring the Taliban to the peace-talk tables.

The HPC said rifts between the Taliban leadership and the infiltration of regional countries into the fray have hampered the discussions to date.

“Peace is not an easy task; it has lots of dimensions,” said Ismail Qasimyar, an HPC advisor.

“There are big interferences and big politics … We will not achieve a result until we work together,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Resolute Support Commander General John F. Campbell said NATO supports the Afghan-led peace talks and blames rifts within the Taliban for the delay in the process.

“I do agree that the peace process will take some time and I think … the peace process has to be Afghan-led,” he said.

“We will continue to see movement although it’s not announced yet on who will represent the Taliban up there because they are fragmented,” he added.

Meanwhile, the head of the National Islamic Unity Party of Afghanistan, Mohammad Akbari told TOLOnews: “Efforts have been made but there have been fewer achievements. The problem in Afghanistan is not internal; it has regional and even international roots.”

“The peace talks will resume if the Taliban accepts Mullah Akhtar Mansoor as their leader,” he said.

The first round of peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban was held in Muree, Pakistan, a few months ago but the second round was delayed after reports emerged of the death of the Taliban’s former leader, Mullah Omar, two years after the fact.

Goats & Spiritualities

It is high time for direct communication.  No matter if it be clumsy, even stupid.  Afghanistan is in peril ~ has been, it seems, forever ~ and will be forever ~ unless I be bold & speak forth.  I am expert at nothing ~ especially that faraway nation a-crumble.  I am, though, an American citizen & it is my duty, I believe, to save it.  And so I will ~ beginning right now!

I write to whomever comes across these words.  If nobody else comes along, I still fiddle.  If I’m fiddling for only myself, perchance it’s best this way.  However, if more than one other entity happens along ~ patriots, let’s riot!

After over 100 posts published of Old Timer Chronicle II ~ more or less exploring the idea of Afghanistan ~ I am now capable enough to do a Sufi spin on this toy piano.  So if it not be too repulsive, kind reader, please witness.

I’m a whirling now ~ moaning ~ moaning rhythmically ~ the vibration hits the street, catapults thru the sky & into your glorious brain, sister, brother!  Ho ho ho, Afghanistan!!!

Probably the most wonderful thing America has ever done is invade this war-torn land.  Trouble is, I feel like I am the only mortal who knows it.  So I’ve spun some fictional characters so that I don’t feel so all alone.  One of them is Capt’n Chuck Fiddler.  But the best & up-most beloved, passionately beloved, is the earthly & miraculously divine Col. Sheena Johnson.  Both of the US Army, these personalities brimful of intrigue & curiosity, live & venture forth via verse in this issue of the Old Timer ~ https://oldtimerchronicle2.wordpress.com/2014/01/29/the-afghaneeland-adventure-series ~ so be it.

The best thing about invading the remarkable & furious Afghanistan is that the U.S. got to avenge the tragic September 11th, 200l, invasion of our own.  So the next time a Taliban whines about our brutality in Afghanistan, let him kick himself in the ass for letting Ben Laden use his country as a platform to murder so many Americans & topple our majestic towers in New York City.

The worst thing about our invading the quaint abode of inquisitive goats and prayerful spiritualities (Afghanistan) is before we finished the job we interrupted it with ~ Iraq!  So be it.

Now ~ dubious & illustrious Iran ~ the central remnant of romantic Persia ~ is surrounded, fragile like, by the vibrantly fragile democracies of Iraq & Afghanistan.  Isn’t America wily!  And now we’ve got Iran at the negotiating table talking ~ nuclear eligibility.  And we both got the same enemy now ~ Al Qaeda ~ out of Saudi Arabia ~ birthed by the fanatical Wahabes & now attacking Syria, Iran’s ally.

Pakistan, our sulking ally with its military blathering outta both sides its mouth, is next ~ now surrounded by the looming democracy of Afghanistan & the booming democracy of India.  Democracy is free-will.  Taliban Sharia Law is tyranny.  Sorry.
